Microplastics have turned up everywhere from the depths of the ocean to the top of Mount Everest, throughout the human body, in the crops and livestock we consume, and in the air we breathe.
In fact, microplastics are found in every corner of the planet, often accumulating in places far from their original source:
There are an estimated 51 trillion microplastic particles in the sea, 500 times more than the stars in our galaxy. They are present in Arctic sea ice, deep-sea sediments, and surface waters.
Microplastics are now recognized as an atmospheric pollutant, found in both indoor and outdoor air. They can be transported by wind and deposited in remote areas.
Soil, particularly agricultural land, is heavily contaminated through the use of sewage sludge as fertilizer.
They have been detected in table salt, honey, sugar, seafood and bottled water. Even our household dust is the shedding of microfibers from synthetic carpets, clothing, and furniture.
The human impact from microplastics infiltration is vast. They have been detected in human blood, lungs, liver, kidneys, and spleen. Particles have been found in the placenta and in breast milk: meaning it is passed from mother to baby. Recent studies have identified microplastics in brain tissue, often in higher concentrations in those with dementia. They have also been found in carotid artery plaques, which is linked to increased risk of stroke and heart attack.
So how do we tackle this tiny, huge problem?
